The Punk Romantics Romeo and Juliet, how twisted was their love affair?

Sid Vicious is a bassist of the British punk rock group Sex Pistols. He met Nancy Spungen, an obnoxious groupie, former stripper and a part-time prostitute in 1976; she aspired to get hitched with popular rock musician such as The New York Dolls, The Ramones and Aerosmith. Instead of getting hooked with the Sex Pistols lead vocalist Johnny Rotten (now John Lydon) and The New York Dolls drummer Jerry Nolan, the American lass chased the bass player Sid. They found love with each other and planned to move in together. Sid Vicious turned to dislike everything from his band and other stuff except for heroin and Nancy.

Before they became lovers, Miss Spungen was diagnosed as schizophrenic. She was labelled as Nauseating Nancy; this woman had out of control tantrums. Several physicians declined to treat her and analyzed her as a schizoid. She was a heroin buff when she’s fifteen. Though she had an erratic behavior, she got an excellent score on an IQ test when she was five. An English Literature doctoral candidate Jennifer Woolston made an academic college essays about the life of Nancy as a strong punk rock woman. On the other hand, at an early age Sid Vicious had also arisen to use speed together with his mum.

The punk artist was fascinated in thrilling and intense sex with a blend of wild aggression made by heroin and other drugs. They both scored synthetic morphine and barbiturates on the streets. The two people were possessed through the dangerous haze of drugs that leads to a passionate tragedy.

On October 12, 1978, their affectionate bond ended cruelly, when the 20-year-old lady was found blood-smeared in the bathroom floor in Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan, New York. She was pronounced dead from a single stab wound to her abdomen. The knife used had been bought by her beau on the 42nd street but some people believed that the switchblade was bought by Spungen and gave it to Sid as a present; it’s a Jaguar K-11 folding blade with a black jaguar engraved grip. Sid Vicious was arrested and accused of murdering Nancy. John Simon Ritchie, his real name, was pleaded not guilty and released on bail. Four months later, the 21-year-old punk addict died of a heroin overdose in 1979.

Anne Ritchie, the mother of Sid found a suicide message in her son’s jacket, stating: “We had a death pact, and I have to keep my half of the bargain. Please bury me next to my baby in my leather jacket, jeans and motorcycle boots. Goodbye.”
